Effective Monitoring
You need a program that's going to allow you to see all web pages visited, read sent and received email, and see both sides of IM conversations...
more
 Web-based /
remote data access
This means:
1. No need to repeatedly access the monitored computer to review recorded data.
2. Keep an eye on things from anywhere.
(Imagine keeping an eye on the kids' Internet activity from your office for instance.)

 Invisibility / Stealth
If you want to have any hope of seeing what the person you're monitoring does when they think no one's looking, you need a program that's completely invisible...
more
 Key Logger
The keylog component is a crucial part of any monitoring suite. (And it's completely missing in the sparse Microsoft's parental controls center in Vista.) Keyloggers are often referred to more specifically as: "ghost key logger" or "stealth key logger"...
more
 Ability to block
Since the Internet changes so fast, we suggest that you go for a program that has some kind of contextual blocker...
more
 Data filtering
Be sure to look for some kind of data filter, search mechanism, and "important" word alert systems that will help you quickly find the essential information...
more
 Screenshots
Some monitoring applications can take screenshots of on-screen activity; for real Internet safety, you'll see the best let you automatically trigger those screenshots when they encounter an "imporant" word...

Guardian Monitor is a solid, if unpolished offering. While on occasion it missed recording some data, for the most part the product performed well. Regrettably, the user interface is just not on par with the other polished, professional applications its in competition with.

Its biggest strength is probably its P2P (peer-to-peer) functionality, which allows parents to see what files their kids are downloading. With the growing popularity of peer-to-peer network applications, this is a nice addition. (With P2P networks reputation for being illegal sources of copyrighted material, this is a cause of concern for many parents.)

Guardian Monitor
Pros
  • good peer-to-peer (P2P) monitoring
  • optional stealth mode
  • affordable
  • Cons
  • poorly designed user interface
  • no automatic screenshots
  • weak email recording functionality
  • not for business use
  • verdict: Good P2P; weak interface.

      Features

One of the features we liked the most was the optional "stealth"; mode. With this you can choose if you want the software to run out in the open or if you want it to run "hidden" from view. We feel like this is a choice some folks will be glad to have.

      Ease of use

The application itself was fairly easy to use, but the user interface itself is just plain bad. Frankly, it looks like it was written ten years ago and clearly doesn't hold itself to the modern user interface conventions. For us this made it just feel cheap compared to the well-polished competition even when it was doing its job fairly well.

      Monitoring effectiveness

It did well in the areas we expected it to, but surprisingly, it was quite weak at recording web-based emails. We had to rely on other mechanisms (like screenshots) to find things we knew we were looking for in web-based emails.

      Accessibility of information

Like much of the competition here, it doesn't have a web-based option for viewing recorded data so you'll have to have access to the recorded computer to retrieve data; however, we were pleased to see the software had an optional Stealth mode.

      Customer Support

Support is provided only via email, which for some people is a turn-off in itself. In our opinion phone support is a must, even if it's on a per-call basis. Support is offered 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, and they claim to have responses to most questions in 24-48 hours. The hours of operation of their support staff aren't disclosed on their site, so we can't offer any guidance on what to expect in that regard.
